Why Whitt

Whitt Shuford for Claiborne County Mayor

“He'll run the county like he runs the farm — planned for the long haul, tight with the money, and approachable to his neighbors.”

  1. 1

A budget planned in decades, not fiscal years

Farmers don't plant for one year's yield, and a county shouldn't budget for one. Eight years as your First District Commissioner — including Chairman of the Finance Committee — Whitt pushed the county toward long-range budget planning and won new fund balance guidelines that protect taxpayers in lean years.

    • Finance Committee Chairman, Claiborne County Commission
    • Won county fund balance guidelines; championed long-range budget planning
    • University of Tennessee graduate, Agricultural Economics
  2. 2

Leaner government that costs you less

Whitt makes payroll at Whitt's Place and works a century farm — he knows every dollar the county spends came off somebody's table. He sponsored the resolution to cut the county commission from 21 seats to 11: a government that's easier to watch, cheaper to run, and able to get things done.

    • Sponsored the resolution downsizing the commission from 21 seats to 11
    • Championed keeping farmland taxes low — farmers understand property taxes
    • Owner-operator, Whitt's Place — locally raised food on Claiborne County tables
  3. 3

Straight answers — and one county

When neighbors couldn't get answers on the South Claiborne data center, Whitt demanded them. That's what uniting the county looks like: everybody gets a straight answer and everybody gets a seat. As mayor he'll build working partnerships with the Commission, our four cities, the schools, the Road Department, and businesses large and small.

    • Demanded transparency for residents on the South Claiborne data center
    • Weekly listening sessions: Porch Sittin' with Whitt, Tuesdays & Thursdays
    • Goal #1: uniting Claiborne County while moving it forward
